As a 100% volunteer organization, our volunteers are our lifeblood
We are always in need of volunteers who can take their passion for dogs and help the precious rescue dogs who are depending on us. Every week, hundreds of volunteers at Dog Star Rescue make the impossible possible, and help change dogs’ lives by fostering, walking dogs in our kennels, supporting our events, helping us secure donations, support our communications, keep our dogs healthy and so much more.
Please note that you must be 18 years or older to volunteer with us.
Over 3 million dogs enter shelters in the U.S. every year and shelters and foster-based rescues like Dog Star help place them in loving, forever homes.
Only 23% of animals obtained as pets come from shelters/rescues, and sadly almost 400K dogs are euthanized every year including many perfectly healthy, adoptable dogs because of lack of space, food and funding.
Dog Star Rescue places stray, abandoned, shelter and owner surrendered dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes into qualified, caring, lifelong homes. Our goal is to develop a network of united supporters to transform as many dogs’ lives as possible into companion pets.
Founded in 2014, we moved into our Bloomfield headquarters in 2017. In 2019 we started our Veterans program (now our Heroes program) and in 2025 we are moving into our new, permanent Bloomfield headquarters. We have saved over 7,500 dogs and counting and can’t do what we do without our volunteers.
We take in dogs locally right here in CT and also partner with shelters and rescues in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. There is a tremendous overpopulation issue in the United States and together, we all make a tremendous difference.
As a volunteer you can help on multiple teams in any way that interests you. After you submit a volunteer application, we will be in touch and you can determine which teams you are interested in and start changing dogs’ lives. We are excited to meet you!
